What is the Lohri festival?

Lohri, a famous festival in North India, is coming soon on 13th January 2024. It’s mainly celebrated by Sikhs and Hindus, and it signals the end of winter and the harvesting of crops. Every year on January 13, people celebrate with excitement.

People wear vibrant traditional clothes, sing, and dance around a bonfire, happy for the longer and warmer days.

Why Lohri is celebrated

The harvest time is a happy season, especially for farmers. They come together to thank the Sun God, Surya, for giving them the warmth needed for a great harvest. It’s a reward for their hard work over many months.

We owe a lot to farmers because they work hard all year; without them, we wouldn’t have food or a place to live. Celebrating the festival of Lohri is a way of showing respect, recognizing the farmers for their efforts, and marking a year of good harvest.

When is Lohri in the Year 2024

Lohri usually falls on 13 January in the Gregorian calendar. In 2024, Lohri will be celebrated on 13 January 2024 (Saturday).

Lohri is Celebrated in Which State

Lohri is a popular winter festival celebrated mainly in North India, especially in the Punjab region. It holds special importance in Punjab and Haryana, but people all over the country also join in the festive celebrations.

Lohri is the Festival of Which Religion

Lohri is an important holiday in Punjab, Jammu, and Himachal Pradesh. It’s an official day off in these places. People in Delhi and Haryana also celebrate the festival, even though it’s not an official holiday there. Sikhs, Hindus, and anyone who wants to join in, celebrate this festival.

In Punjab, Pakistan, it’s not an official holiday, but Sikhs, Hindus, and some Muslims in rural Punjab and cities like Faisalabad and Lahore celebrate Lohri. Muhammad Tariq, a former director of Faisalabad Arts Council, thinks it’s essential to keep the festival alive since it’s celebrated in both Pakistan Punjab and Indian Punjab.

Why Lohri is Celebrated in Sikhism

Lohri doesn’t hold religious importance for Sikhs. Sikhs celebrate Lohri mainly because of its strong connection to Punjabi culture. Lohri doesn’t have roots in Sikhism. So, does this mean that we Sikhs are just following the crowd and celebrating a day that holds no meaning for us? The concept of Lohri goes against the teachings of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Sikhs don’t worship fire or the sun. Going around the bonfire, tossing sweets, puffed rice, and popcorn into the fire, and praying to the fire to protect our children isn’t in line with the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib.

How to Celebrate the Lohri Festival?

Lohri is mainly a festival where families, friends, and relatives come together to celebrate. It creates a strong sense of community as people have a good time and share sweets. While it’s a harvest festival meant for farmers, in Punjab, where agriculture is significant, almost everyone joins in the celebration.

The highlight of Lohri is a big bonfire around which people gather to sing and dance. Many rituals take place, like throwing sesame seeds, jaggery, sugarcane sticks, Rewaris, popcorn, and other items into the fire while dancing around it.

People dance to the lively beats of the drum or Dhol, and the dance style is called Bhangra. It’s known as a vibrant and exciting dance, and people wear the most colorful clothes to mark the special occasion.
